On April 22nd at the Base Scout Volpe Astuta, in Palermo, a testing session of the VR exercises developed was held, together with staff and youths who are part of the Coltivare Bio Naturale Association, organized by IRSEI ETS. The realization of the Italian exercise “Al Ristorante” tested during the event, was also made possible thanks to the fundamental contribution of Luigi Rotondo of the Coltivare Bio Naturale Association of Palermo, which has started a free and nonprofit collaboration with IRSEI ETS who, strengthened by his direct experience with students with Special Educational Needs (BES), made his educational and experiential know-how available to support the conception phase of an immersive, highly personalized exercise aimed at improving students’ social-emotional skills. The exercise was then filmed at Moltivolti, which kindly made its staff and space available for the shooting of a the VR exercise. The VR exercise is inspired by the activities of the Oikos project, an initiative of the Association that promotes inclusion, socialization and autonomy through cooking workshops and self-development paths. Specifically, during the April 22nd event, it was therefore possible to test the exercise, which is developed in 4 macro areas:
1- How to interact in the kitchen-The user takes on the role of an assistant chef engaged in preparing an omelet, following basic instructions in a simulated environment.
2- How to interact with customers – Once the dish is prepared, the user moves on to serving in the dining room, where appropriate communication choices with customers are simulated.
3-How to set the table-The activity requires placing cutlery, plates and glasses correctly, training attention and precision.
4-Basic hygiene rules-Fundamental to ensuring safe and conscious behavior in the kitchen, these rules are integrated into the course in a simple and understandable way.
During the event, parents and association staff had the opportunity to discover the VR scenario, learn more about the Bit The Spectrum project, and find out how Virtual Reality can have positive impacts on autonomy development! IRSEI would like to warmly thank the Associazione Coltivare Bio Naturale for its valuable contribution in the ideation of the exercise and all the participants to the event for the warm welcome and appreciation of the work done!
This new virtual reality exercise is available for free to anyone who wants to use it, accessible from the project website and on the IRSEI project portfolio, representing a concrete step toward inclusion and accessibility in education and training.
